Isipathana continue hunt for Singer league

Isipathana College continued their good form in the Singer League Under20 rugby tournament with the second win in two weeks when they outclassed Katugastota Antonians 43/17 up in Kandy. Meanwhile Royal, Trinity, Science and the Thomians too came out with success in week 2.

  • Science edge out Peter’s

    Science=13 points

    St Peter’s=10 points


Science “Dark Horse” of the Singer League 2016 took time to settle in this game. Peter’s who took an early lead through a penalty and a converted try were threatening in their three quarter moves. Selvarajah penalty and Theekshana try gave them a clear lead in the initial half. But it was the lads from Mount Lavinia who stormed backed in the later half with some powerful three quarter moves. Thanuja Maduranga put two back to back penalties. Tharindu Maduranga scored the try for Science to pull off a nail bitter at Bambalapitiya

 

  • Rajans edge out Kingswood

    Dharmaraja=24 points

    Kingswood=17 points


The game which was played for “Willian Weerasinghe” memorial trophy saw the Randles Hill lads take the lead at “lemons” at 12/10. This was a good win for the Rajans after being outclassed in the opening week against Isipathana in Colombo. Kingswood is yet win any games in their two outings after going down to the Peterites in Colombo a week ago. Rajans played cohesive rugby to clinch the game 24/17 with the help of late second half burst.

 

  • Unimpressive by Royal

    Royal =17 points

    Wesley=14 points


Royal, defending Singer League champions, had to fire all cylinders before pulling off a nail bitter against Wesley last week-end. Royal prop forward Ayesh Maduranga scored for Royal with Ovin Askey on target with the conversion kick to put the first score on board. Though Wesley got plenty of scoring opportunities their scrum half, Avinhka Lee continued his bad form not being able to put the vital points on board. Wesley in their earlier game against Trinity too missed out on a minimum of two easy penalties which cost them the game. Royal scored their second try after the run around through Haritha Lokugamage with Askey on target to take a clear 14 to nothing lead. Dayan Sabar crossed over for Wesley try with Lee on target with the kick. But Askey penalty took Royal further ahead with 17/7 lead. 

Wesley who fought back scored through Denister Gunathilake with Jurangpathy adding the extra 2 points to cut the deficit to three points. With three minutes to go Jurampathy got a golden opportunity to level scores through a penalty but he missed the target to end on the losing end. Both sides ball handling was in low form in the second half which will come as priority for the head Coaching staff of both institutions, Sanath Martis and Jeewan Gunathilake before they move forward for their third outing next week.

 

  • Pathana continue winning streak

Though the game was closely battled out in the first half the lads from Havelock Town settled well later on to score 7 tries in the game. This was the second win for Nilfer Ibrahim’s lads who looking to bring back the Singer League. They have a formidable outfit with Rugby being the religion at Isipathana they are improving game by game. Antonians though on wrong end losing their second game played well in patches. They will need to play to their maximum in 80 minutes which will take them through. With two tough opening encounters against Science and Isipathana Antonians will be able do well in the coming weeks ahead.       Visit the Schools Rugby Hub 

 

  • Trinity back to form

    Trinity=41 points

    Joes=14 points


Trinity got back to near peak when they got their act together as a team. Trinity took earlier lead through their lightning fast winger Geshan Pethiyagoda touching down in a splendid winger’s try. Full back Sanushka Abeywickrema touched down “lions” second try which gave fly half Thusila Perera his second successful conversion to take 14 to nothing lead. Then it was the turn of former Sri Lanka Youth captain Denam Madena’s son Rishane Madena who powered his way through for a pack leaders try. Thusila was on target with the conversion to take 21 to nothing lead. 

But Trinity defense looked in pieces as Chathura Seneviratne of Joes intercepted and covered nearly 60 meters to touch down. Raveen added the extra 2 points. Malisha try took Trinity further ahead 26/7. When Trinity started relaxing and gaps in defense was noted by the Joes who scored through Supun with Chtura Seneviratne adding the extra 2 points to cut the deficit 26/14. Two more Trinity tries through Shalindra Alahakoon and Anuk Boyagoda took Trinity home without much difficulty. Lasan Wijesuriya who came in the last 10 minutes played a grand game moving the line through good passes and converted one of the corner flag tries as well occupying the fly half berth. Trinity looked a completely different outfit with their Coach Sean Wijesinghe returning full time after his stint with Kandy SC winning two trophies on offer.  

 

  • Second win for Thomians

St Thomas=40 points

DS=6 points


Thomians continued their good form when they outclassed D S Senanayake in one way traffic. Thomians scored at will taking the short breather at 33/6 at the short breather. But it was Thomian full back Mayan Jaywardena who scored a hat-trick and two tries each by Herath and Bumindra which floored the D S who will find the going tough in the next matches as well.
