Isipathana, Trinity, Royal continue winning ways

Trinity retained the Cannon R.S. De Saram Trophy By Shamseer Jaleel After the completion of three matches, three leading rugby-playing schools continued their winning form in the Singer Under 20 Division I rugby tournament. Defending school champions Isipathana, under the able leadership of Sri Lanka youth player Omalka Gunaratne, beat St. Joseph’s College in a keen 23-17 tussle, where the Havelock Town lads scored four tries in response to the Joes’ three. The Joes put up a good fight in the first half but the Pathana lads played hard until the last whistle to win the match at Longden Place. Up in Kandy, Royal College handed the Rajans a 17-3 loss at the Bogambara Stadium. Royal triumphed over St. Anthony’s and Science College in their previous encounters. A day earlier Trinity too sounded a warning to the other leading schools in the competition that they were no pushovers when yet another Sri Lanka youth player Isuru Rangala helped the Lions conquer the Thomian grit 40-15 at Havelock Park. Trinity totally dominated proceedings by scoring 5 tries to the Thomians’ 2. The Peterites meanwhile registered their second win by beating Wesley 45-22. The Bambalapitiya school beat Kingswood earlier in the tournament. Kingswood, travelling to Colombo for the first time this season, outclassed the newcomers to the top league C.W.W. Kannangara 60-0. Science scored their second win and the Antonians continued their losing streak at Nittawela last weekend. The Mount Lavinia lads won the encounter 36-27. The following encounters will take place after one week’s rest in lieu of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. St. Peter’s vs. Isipathana, Kingswood vs. St Joseph’s, C.W.W. Kanangara MV vs. Wesley, Science vs. Trinity and S. Thomas’ vs. Royal.
