In 1987, the All Blacks made history by winning their first World Cup. Despite being the most widely known and dominant team in the sport of rugby, a second World Cup has not been lifted by them since.

Feats of sporting brilliance are many in rugby: such as Johnny Wilkinson’s extra time kick which won England their first and only Cup win so far, or the Springboks shut out of the All Blacks in 1995, immortalized in the feature film Invictus. Rugby has been described ‘as a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen’, and is well recognized as emphasizing on the power of teamwork rather than the individual.

Sri Lanka’s fascination with rugby is intense, both at school and club level. Many play for fitness, with beach rugby being a popular past time over the weekend. Recently described as ‘the most suited beach for beach rugby,’ Negombo is fast becoming the preferred location for a game of tap or contact.

Famous for spectacular events, the Jetwing Hotels that are located in Negombo is said to be holding what can only be described as a rugby extravaganza. From the kickoff on the 9 September, the beaches of Negombo will be the battleground for the trophy with a stadium atmosphere set up for guests to witness the action first hand.

Taking place on the beachfront between Jetwing Blue and Jetwing Beach, all matches promise to be a spectacle not to be missed with plenty of delicious food, drinks, and fun. And that’s not all… In the spirit of the season, Jetwing is offering an unbeatable package to all diehard fans: a stay over during the duration of the cup for two, on bed and breakfast at any Jetwing hotel in Negombo for only Rs. 14,400 along with other attractions.
