The Josephian Futsal Soccer Carnival is the largest school-organised sports event in the country. It is also the largest event in the inter-school soccer calendar with over 2000 students participating across seven age groups with representation from all nine provinces of the country.
This year, this fun filled and purposeful day is held under the theme “The First Touch”. The theme itself depicts the purpose of this occasion, to give the first touch or a stepping-stone for young soccer stars. While the kids have a blast on the field, the coaches will scout for young talent.
This sporting extravaganza has now turned out to be a very eagerly anticipated calendar event of St. Joseph’s College. This year will be the eight incarnation of the Josephian Futsal Soccer Carnival and will be held on 30 July at the St. Joseph’s College, Colombo main grounds from 8 a.m. onwards.
The Soccer Advisory Committee of St. Joseph’s College with the full support of the Rector Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel and Prefect of Games Rev. Fr. Milan Bernard will be organising the event. Jerome Ambrose and M. Fazal Nazli are the Co-chairmen of the organising committee.
The tournament will be held for seven age groups starting from the Under 9s all the way up to the Under 19s. A total of 206 teams will be participating in all age groups. The Cup, Plate, Bowl and Saucer trophies will be awarded in the Under 13, 15, 17 and 19 age groups and this year a new trophy, the “Shield Trophy” is included to the list of awards. The Under 19 teams will play out for the Rev. Fr. Sylvester Ranasinghe Challenge Trophy. Another eye-catching feature would be the Old Joes vs. Old Bens traditional fixture for the Peter Ranasinghe Trophy.
The Chief Guest of the event will be Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara while Anura De Silva (President FFSL), K. P. P. Pathirana (Vice President FFSL) and Hemantha Abeykoon (President SLSFA) will be attending as Guests of Honour.
The Chief Guest for the Opening Ceremony at 8 a.m. would be Vice President FFSL Naleen Silva.
