Junior golf to rise again in Kandy with Prima Sunrise Bread

Prima Sunrise Bread will once again partner the Sri Lanka Golf Union as the main sponsor for the Regional Junior Open Golf Championship in Kandy for the third consecutive year.

The Kandy Regional Junior Open Golf Championship will be played at the picturesque Victoria Golf and Country Club, Rajawella from 6-7 August. 

With golf growing in popularity, the Sri Lanka Golf Union has now got more than 50 entries for the Regional Junior Open. Golf development programs for juniors are being actively carried out with the help of the Sri Lanka Golf Union. “We believe that these young golfers will go on toward national representation and such tournament opportunities will create the platform for juniors to shine,” said Chairperson of the Junior Golf Development Committee of the Sri Lanka Golf Union Niloo Jayatilake.

The top positions are being vied for in four age group categories: Gold (15-17 years), Silver (12-14 years), Bronze (10-11 years) and Copper (nine years and under). The top-ranked players in 2015 and the winners of the Sri Lanka Open 2015 are expected to keenly compete to maintain their current ranking as well. 

It is a tournament that is open to both boys and girls under the age of 18 and is a very important tournament in the golfing calendar as it will be considered for national ranking points in 2016.

Sri Lanka has produced many talented golfers who have started as juniors and it will be interesting to watch how the present crop of youngsters, which includes Tania Balasuriya, K. Danushan, Dilshan Malinda, Kayla Perera, Hiruna Siegera, Levon Niyarepola, Vinod Weerasinghe, S Flamin, S. Praveenraj, Nirekh Tejwani, Yannik Kumara, Mahisha Hirushan and Vikash Tangadore, battle it out over two days at a truly award-winning internationally designed golf course. 

The prize giving will be held on Sunday after the second round and Prima Sunrise Bread representatives will be on hand to distribute their tasty goodies to all the young golfers taking part.
