Kumari named Sri Lanka captain for Asian Junior Athletics Championship

Commonwealth Youth Games 2011 silver medalist in women’s 400 metres R. M. Siwanthi Kumari Ratnayake has been appointed captain of the Sri Lanka athletics team that will take part at the 15th Asian Junior Athletics Championship to be held in Colombo, the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka has said in a media release.



 Kumari is a champion athlete produced by St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle. She has been given the task of taking the oath during the official opening ceremony on behalf of all the participating athletes. Another Commonwealth Youth Games participant in the 110 metres hurdles K.D.A.C. Randeniya has been appointed as the captain of the men’s team.

 C. P. Weerasinghe of Vijitha Central College, Dickwella and G. M. Nimesha Siriwardena or Galenbindunuwewa Madhya Maha Vidyalaya have been selected to light the Games torch. When asked about the medal prospects for Sri Lanka, head coach Susantha Fernando said that they had a good chance of winning some medals. The Championship will be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium from June 9 to 12.
