The 42nd L.V. Jayaweera Inter-school Boxing Championship, hosted by Mahanama College Colombo, was declared open yesterday following a ceremony held at the school auditorium.
The tournament, which is organised by the Boxing Committee of Mahanama College under the patronage of the Old Boys’ Association of Mahanama College, was declared open by chief guest LAUGFS Holdings Chairman W.H. Wegapitiya.
Around 400 boxers from over 70 schools from around the island are set to compete in the prestigious tournament and will compete in three separate categories. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Wegapitiya stated that he found similarities in the qualities of a boxer and those that make a successful entrepreneur. He said that, although he didn’t ever play the sport, qualities like tenacity, flexibility and courage were traits that he identified with.
Boxing Association President Aubrey Peiris said that the tournament should be considered one of the major boxing tournaments in the country as it acts as a stepping stone for budding boxers.
“We have to consider the new lads coming into the sport. They need to be nurtured. This tournament has always given them a platform to be identified,” he said.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from 7 to 11 May.
