Geared by its support of rugby which spans over two decades from grassroots to the pinnacle of the sport, Land Rover offered its principal sponsorship to the 1st XV Rugby Team of Trinity College Kandy for the fourth consecutive year on Wednesday.
They were joined by the associate sponsorship of Munchee which stated this was its novel sponsorship of the game of rugby.
“Trinity College is not only a great educational institute but also a national monument which has produced some of the greatest productive citizens who contributed to our nation in numerous ways,” declared SML Frontier Automotive Managing Director Sheran Fernando.
“We at Land Rover believe that we share some of the values and views that Trinity College Rugby inculcates within their student players, like integrity, pride, courage, composure and capability,” he further asserted.
Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (CBL) Group General Manager Theja Peiris stated that despite this being Munchee’s first sponsorship for rugby, it has a history of providing sponsorship to sporting tournaments like National Volleyball Championship, the Junior and Senior John Tarbet Athletic Meet and football, hockey and squash tournaments at national school level.
“Munchee, which is the flagship brand of CBL, the largest FMCG conglomerate in Sri Lanka, hopes to make a positive impact to the community through such sponsorships. As the associate sponsor, we look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Trinity College rugby,” she mentioned.
Trinity College is one of the pioneer schools in the game of rugby in Sri Lanka and is achieving and growing standards that other schools set as benchmarks to follow. Its old boy L.E. Blaze is credited with introducing the game to the island’s schools in 1906.
The match between Royal and Trinity is the most-watched rugby match in the country and the sponsors believe that their provision of funds to this game will be quite beneficial. CBL announced its sponsorship to be valued between Rs. 8 to 10 million while Land Rover stated how its partnership with Trinity College Rugby surpasses monetary value.
Both sponsors wished the school’s Rugby Captain Rahul Karunathilake the best of luck and presented him with his team’s official jersey for the 72nd Bradby encounter taking place on 30 April at the Royal College Sports Complex followed by the return leg on 14 May at Pallakele Rugby Stadium.
