Sheran Fernando     Land Rover, the iconic British brand, recently came forward as an official sponsor of the upcoming ‘Around the Pearl 2015’ (ATP) initiative, which is set to take place from 9 to 19 April. The 10-day Around the Pearl bicycle ride will be conducted by 20 of Sri Lanka’s leading business professionals, to raise public support and funds for children affected by Cerebral Palsy (CP). The Around the Pearl initiative is conducted in partnership with the Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation (CPLF) and WrooM – a project that promotes cycling as an alternative mode of transport and increases awareness of public road safety rules. The cyclists will travel the perimeter of the entire island and their journey will take them from the city of Colombo to Galle, Negombo, Mirissa, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura and onwards. Commenting on the initiative SML Frontier Automotive Managing Director Sheran Fernando stated, “ATP is a wonderful initiative that creates awareness about cerebral palsy in Sri Lanka. It is an important cause and much awareness of this disorder should be created. Many children would otherwise be bedridden or kept in a room due to their inability to move. This year, ATP will be raising funds for the Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation, the first organisation in Sri Lanka for children with cerebral palsy. “It is a great honour for us to sponsor ATP and we’ll be following the cyclists throughout their journey and providing them with medical assistance and additional support. We would like to wish the Around the Pearl team members the best of luck as they take on the challenge of cycling around the entire island, in order to enrich the lives of children affected by CP.” Last year the Around the Pearl initiative helped to create awareness about cerebral palsy whilst generating funds for at least 1,000 wheelchairs for children with CP. This year, Around the Pearl will not aim to raise funds for wheelchairs but will donate all proceeds from the initiative, to the Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation. Additionally ‘Around the Pearl’ cyclists will also conduct three camps throughout their journey to raise awareness about cerebral palsy. The camps will take place in Galle on 9 April, in Batticaloa on 12 April and in Colombo on 19 April. Land Rover’s well-considered partnerships and events resonate with consumers who regard the brand as a beacon of adventure and discovery that extends beyond all boundaries.
