Lennie De Silva Memorial Trophy: Royal vie for sixth win against formidable Kingswood

Royal College, this year’s national schools’ hockey champions, will vie for the sixth win against formidable Kingswood College, Kandy in the 9th hockey encounter for the Lennie De Silva Memorial Trophy today 3.30 pm at the Astro Turf Colombo.
The prestigious annual Lennie De Silva Memorial trophy between the two leading schools started 2004. Royal lead the tally with five wins against Kingswood’s one. Two encounters have ended in draw.
The trophy was started in the memory of Lennie De Silva, who introduced the game of hockey to Royal College in 1954. De Silva, an old boy of at Kingswood College Kandy, had served in the both tutorial staff of Kingswood (1937-19460 and Royal College (1946-1969).
The first XI match between the two teams will be followed by the Under 15 encounter for the Roshan Kathab memorial trophy. Dr. Kathab was one of the best forwards Royal College had produced in the nineties. He died of cancer in July 2005.
M.I. De Silva, a founder member of the Royal College Hockey Club, who in 1968 captained the school team, Colombo South hockey team, Ceylon Schools’ hockey team, and Cadet Corp hockey team, will be the chief guest for the encounter.
