Lyceum’s Janidu does Sri Lanka proud at World Youth Scrabble Championship

Janidu Karunaratne of Lyceum International School, Wattala won the highest game score of 685 at the eighth World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) 2013, organised by the World English-Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA), which was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, recently.
In the warm-up tournament, held on 11 December, Migara Jayasinghe won the ‘B’ Division, but unfortunately the highest word score for 162 points for the word ‘prolated’, played by him on the first day of the main tournament was broken on the last day during the 20th game by Pasith Teeka-Ut Tamakorn of Thailand with ‘triazole’ for 203 points.
From the 10-member Sri Lankan team, Nusrath Sariffo’deen (13.5 games), Migara Jayasinghe (13 games), Janidu Karunaratne (12 games), Hayati Rassool (12 games) and Thavalakshman Yoganathan (12 games) from Lyceum Wattala were placed 37th, 44th, 60th, 61st and 64th, respectively.
This under-18 tournament attracted 138 players from many countries, including the UK, USA, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore, India, Qatar, Oman, New Zealand and Kenya. Moizullah Baig of Pakistan won the Championship by winning 19.5 games out of 24, with a margin of 1448.
