Maduranga, Darin emerge victorious at CMSC

Maduranga Caldera in his 998cc Yamaha R1, clocking in a 10.6 second pass on the quarter mile and Darin Weerasinghe in his Nissan GTR ending the race in 11.0 seconds flat emerged victorious at the Ceylon Motor Sports Club Drag Race, which was held on 9 December 2012, at the at the Katukurunda Race Track in Kalutara.



The event which saw more than 50 entries from a wide array of vehicles, including limited edition Honda Mugen RR and the beastly Nissan GTR was held in cooperation with the Air Force.

All contestants had to relay a distance of 400 m at the Katukurunda race track, with the race flagged off by means of an electronic device called a ‘Christmas Tree’.

The fastest time of the day was set by Maduranga Caldera in his 998cc Yamaha R1, clocking in a 10.6 second pass on the quarter mile.

The fastest time set by a car was 11.0 seconds flat by Darin Weerasinghe in his Nissan GTR.

Pasindu Wijesekera who was competing for the first time was the winner of the ‘cars upto 1,000cc’.

He ran his event concurrently in the 1,300cc class and managed to have a qualifying time quicker than those in the class above him.

Janaka Mayakaduwa managed to secure a double championship by winning both the ‘cars 1,601cc upto 2,200cc’ and the ‘2 WD open’ categories in his Honda Civic Mugen RR, whilst Zakie Ismail was runner up in both events.

The latest Tag Heuer Electronic timing equipment was imported for the CMSC and used for the very first time, with remarkable accuracy. The start and finish had live video cameras to ensure competitors do not have false starts.
