Mahamaya swimming champs for 18 years

Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy won the 43rd Sri Lanka Schools Age Group Girl’s Swimming Championships which was worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium Pool recently. Mahamaya continued their winning streak for the 18th year, accumulating a total of 559 points. 

Sathushimi Dewyanjali (Under 19 Freestyle, Butterfly and Individual Medley), Methmi Anjana (Under 11), Kalani Ekanayake (50 meter and 100 meter freestyle event), Nilupuli Medegama (Under 13 50 meter and 100 meter), Onethra Weerasinghe, Maheshika Hewage and Devindhya Jayawardena stamped their class in the Under 15 level which was dominated by the Kandy School at the meet. 

Uththamala Silva created records at Under 17, 200 meters, and 400 meters events. Vinoli Siriwardena won the 200 meter Backstroke, 100 meter Backstroke and 50 meter Backstroke events in the Under 19 level while Nisali Dissanayake won the 100 meter and 200 meter Breaststroke event. 

Debutants Amodika Sumitraarachchi, Gayatri Panabokka, Imesh Malalasekera and Heshani Madigasekera too brought fame for the school in their first major outing and the future looks very bright for Mahamaya in swimming and they look untouchable at present. 

A huge part was played by Principal Indra Wianachchi, Chintha Ruwan Pathirana, former Principals R.W.I.K. Ratnayake and W.H.B. Wijesinghe, Deputy Principal Visakha Herath, Teacher-in-Charge Dhammika Siripala and Dhammika Mahawattage for guiding the youngsters to this high standard which is proud for the Central Province as well. They are coached by G.H. Sugath. Initially the Kandy school was coached by Pemlath who is involved with Trinity swimming at present.
