GEOFF Marsh still has not been given a reason as to why he was sacked as coach of Sri Lanka.
After a hectic month in which his younger son Mitchell blitzed the Big Bash, elder son Shaun was dumped from the Australian one-day squad and he was sacked, the former Test selector and coach says he was still in the dark about his personal situation.
Back in Australia, Marsh said he was now on the lookout for another coaching role - while still baffled about why he is not still planning Sri Lanka’s upcoming series against Australia.
“It has been a pretty hectic two weeks … and getting the news about not continuing my coaching role there was disappointing. But we’ll move on,” Marsh said.
“Not really, I have not had a reason yet - we will see how that all pans out.
“I really enjoyed getting back into coaching, I thought I was coaching well at the time.
“You know that feeling at the time.
“The most important thing is getting the respect of the players, and I believe I had that in the first couple of months.
“I was looking forward to moving on.”
As the senior Marsh considers the future, elder son Shaun will also return to Perth to lick his wounds after a dismal Test summer saw him lose his place in the 50-over set-up.
His father said the chance to make runs for WA was one that the talented number three was one he must take.
“He’s going along okay,” Marsh told SEN.
“Unfortunately for Shaun he had that back problem, couldn’t train for six weeks and busted his gut to get back for Boxing Day.
“Knowing Shaun, if he had got off to a good start he would have been right, but he struggled with his confidence.
“They have given him the opportunity to go back and play Shield cricket which is the best thing for him to find his form.
“The boys around him know what sort of player he is, the ball is in his court, get some runs and go again.”
By contrast, the Scorchers star continues to press his international claims, with the T20 and one-day clashes to come in the next weeks.
“Mitch is going alright - he has got a long way to go he is still learning the game and learning what it is all about,” Marsh said.
“The way the selectors are dealing with these young kids is fantastic and it is exciting times with the way Michael Clarke is going and Ricky (Ponting) still being around the dressing room.
“It is so important for the next couple of years.” (SportsNewsFirst.com)
