Matale Thomians and Vijaya College Matale both were awarded as the joint champions at the Central Province Hockey Championship which took place at the University of Peradeniya grounds recently. Meanwhile the Katugastota Anthony’s Convent girls stamped their class with the girls’ title. In total 23 teams (12 boys and 11 girls) team battled it out for honors at the annual event.
For the winners skipper Sandunika Dewagiri was accurate in the goal shoot after the scores ended in a nil all after full time. Girls High School Kandy beat Swarnamali Girls school to secure 3rd place. Both home town rivals Matale Thomians and Vijaya College though selected to the finals due to heavy rain prevented the final to be worked off which resulted in both awarded as the joint champions.
Another Matale school Christ Church beat Kingswood to secure number three position. All three boys’ schools from Matale continued their dominancy in hockey.
