Swimmer Matthew Abeysinghe has broken the record set by Julian Bolling in 1991 by clinching seven Gold medals at the South Asian Games. In 1991, Bolling bagged five Gold medals for Sri Lanka.
Matthew Abeysinghe won two Gold medals Wednesday in the 200m Individual medley and 100m freestyle events adding to the five Gold medals he had won earlier.
Abeysinghe won his first Gold in the 2016 South Asian Games in the Men’s 200m Freestyle Swimming event on Saturday and the second Gold in 100m Butterfly. He also led the 4x100m Men’s relay team to the first place, winning his third Gold.
On Sunday he won Gold in men’s 50m freestyle event and 400m Individual Medley events.
He also won a Bronze in 50m backstroke, led the team to Silver in 4x200m Free Style Relay and 4x100 M Medley Relay.
Sri Lanka is currently in second place with a total of 133 in the medal tally behind India. Sri Lanka has won 24 Golds, 46 Silvers and 63 Bronzes.
