The Mahagastota Hill Climb commenced 78 years ago, conducted by the Ceylon Motor Sport Club which has done a great job in building its rich history as a popular race event in Sri Lanka.

But the same could not be said of the state of the track, as in the recent past the track was in a dilapidated state. The despairing state of the track resulted in poor performances by both drivers and riders alike.

McLarens Group Chairman Rohan De Silva, who himself is a veteran in the sport, undertook the task of improving the state of the track so as to lift the standard of the event for the benefit of all the drivers and riders as well as spectators.

With the backing of the company’s subsidiary companies Mobil, McFoil and Avon this goal was achieved with much ease thereby creating one of the most beautiful race tracks in Sri Lanka.

The Upgrade to the track with the McLarens Group being the main sponsor for the event helped the CMSC to conduct the 79th Mahagastota Hill Climb recently, on a grandeur scale.

The Upgrade of the track and its safety standards saw track records tumbling one after the other without any mishaps to drivers or riders. The uplifted safety standards helped participants to push their limits and achieve what has never been achieved before.

Ironic as it may seem the course record which was held by De Silva himself was shattered by Darin Weerasinghe in his Subaru STI 10 in which he clocked 34.348 seconds and the goal of preparing the track had been achieved and with the current renovations the records will surely continue to tumble in the future.

All competitors, officials and spectators highly appreciated the work put in by the McLarens Group to make the event a success and also for the continuous support that the company offers for the development of motor sport in the country.
