With the prime objective of popularising the national game of Sri Lanka within the mercantile sector, The Mercantile Volleyball Association of Sri Lanka (MVASL), initiated the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament in 2012 and ever since, two national tournaments have been successfully completed with the participation of over 80 teams from the mercantile sector. MVASL has made necessary arrangements to commence this year’s Mercantile Volleyball Tournament in August, 2014. The Mercantile Volleyball Association (MVA) was established as an affiliated body of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation in 2012 to promote the national game of Sri Lanka and to provide an opportunity for the private sector employees to take part in the game.  As an attempt to provide an opportunity for the youth in the mercantile sector to engage in extracurricular activities and bringing our national game closer to the hearts of young associates, MVA commenced the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament (MVT) for the very first time in December 2012. During 2012 and 2013 MVA successfully completed two tournaments with the participation of more than 80 teams in the mercantile sector thus making the tournament a distinct event in the national sports calendar. The tournament is organized as per national standards and is open for both men and women. This year, the tournament will be played under the following three categories: Super League, Championship Trophies and a Division “A” Tournament. The tournament will be conducted on a knockout basis in the preliminary rounds at the ‘Maharagama Youth Centre’ on 16 and 17 August for both men and women. The final matches and the award ceremony will take place on 30 August at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. Trophies will be presented to the winning team, the runner-up team for all categories and for the best male and female players. The estimated cost for the proposed tournament will be approximately Rs.3.5 million which includes prize money, ground fees, ground preparation fees, pre and post publicity cost, referee fees and related costs as well as food and accommodation etc. The Mercantile Volleyball Association is expected to get sponsorships from the corporate sector to meet the estimated cost.
