The adrenaline rush that was the 2016 motor racing season reaches its zenith on Friday, 2 December, with the CEAT SLADA Championship Awards, at which the stars of the country’s racing tracks will be honoured for their hi-octane exploits.

The performances of drivers and riders at six races conducted by the Sri Lanka Auto-sports Drivers Association (SLADA) will be considered in the crowning of the Champion Driver, Champion Rider, Car Team Champions and Motorbike Team Champions at this glamorous event, supported by CEAT Kelani Holdings as title sponsor for the seventh successive year.

Several other individual awards for top performers in different racing categories are to be presented at the 2016 CEAT SLADA Championship Awards at the Grand Ballroom of the Galadari Hotel. Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara has been invited to officiate as Chief Guest at the event.

“The CEAT SLADA Championship has grown in stature every year to become the most prestigious title event for Sri Lanka’s motor racing fraternity,” SLADA President Mahesh Gammanpila said. “While the passion and commitment of the competitors and fans are indispensable for the growth of motor sports, the championship would not have been elevated to its current status without the consistent support of CEAT.”

CEAT Kelani Managing Director Vijay Gambhire said: “CEAT’s support to motor sport in Sri Lanka is an extremely logical engagement for the brand because motor sport is all about performance and endurance, and both are reliant on tyres that must perform to expectation and demand. We are delighted to partner SLADA and play a significant role in developing Sri Lankan motor sports.”

The six races conducted for the 2016 CEAT SLADA Championship were the Foxhill Supercross, Gunner Supercross, Gajaba Supercross, Sigiriya Rallycross, Rotherham Circuit Meet – Race 1 and Rotherham Circuit Meet – Race 2.

SLADA has confirmed that the 2017 Championship would comprise of five races, the Foxhill Supercross, Sigiriya Rallycross, Gunner Supercross, Gajaba Supercross and Rotherham Katukurunda.

Besides its sponsorship of the CEAT SLADA Championship, CEAT supports the race meets conducted by the Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka Air Force, as well as the sport’s governing body Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS). As part of its partnership with SLAS, CEAT Kelani Holdings is the principal sponsor of all Ford Laser/Mazda 1300cc and 1500cc ‘one-make’ racing events conducted during the year, at which all competing drivers race on CEAT radial tyres.

CEAT fields its own racing team at all major race meets on the local calendar, and won the Team Championship for Cars for a second successive year in 2015 with a total of 61 podium finishes, accounting for one of the two top laurels at last year’s CEAT SLADA Championship awards.
