The very first national indoor rowing championship in Sri Lanka successfully concluded recently after three consecutive days of competition which was organised by General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) and Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club (BLRC) along with the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) at the Kotelawala Defence University Indoor Basket Ball complex.
KDU Vice Chancellor Major General Milinda Peiris graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest on 26 February. A total number of 62 events were held with the participation of 250 male and 120 female competitors representing 14 schools, three universities, two clubs and Tri-forces rowing athletes. The closing ceremony and award distribution was held in the presence of Ministry of Tourism and Sports Secretary M.I.M. Rafeek as Chief Guest and officials of Amateur Rowing Association, Bolgoda Lake Rowing club and senior military officers of Tri- Forces on 28 February. The three day national event consisted of four types of events.

2.2000 m – Individual Event
3.500 mx4x4 – Team Event
4.Endurance challenge event
Furthermore, the rowing championship was categorised based on age and event up to 11 categories.

2.15-16 years
3.17-18 years
4.19-20 years
5.21-22 years
6.23-25 years
7.26-29 years
8.Over 30 years (masters)
9.Open light weight
10.The open event
11.The endurance challenge event
Rowing athletes competed for 22 trophies under the 11 categories mentioned above as male and female events and out of 22 trophies Sri Lanka Army secured 11 trophies by obtaining highest numbers of trophies, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) won three trophies becoming second highest and Prince of Wales College and Ladies College secured two trophies each to become the third highest. Throughout the championship it was observed that eight new records and four athletes among them were able to maintain their timing in par with Asian level rowing competitors.
