Nazeem Mohamed was elected President of the Western Province Rudy Football Union (WPRFD) uncontested for another term, at their Annual General Meeting held at the Havelock Park Auditorium on 31 January.
Mohamed has a proven track-record in rugby, captaining Science College from 1990 to 1991.
He also led a powerful CH&FC team, from 1999 to 2000, to a league championship.
Mohamed, who represented the country from 1992 to 1999, took part in the Hong Kong 7s.
He led the national Sevens team in 1999 and represented the national-15-a-side team in three Rugby Asiad tournaments.
His outstanding achievements paved the way for another feather in his cap when he was appointed to the national selection panel for many years alongside Chandrishan Perera, Hisham Abdeen, A. Basmayaka and Bharath Hegoda.
Mohamed was earlier deputy to Rizly Illyas, who led the WPRFU with great distinction.
The WPRFU has in the past helped with the development of school and club rugby by providing financial assistance and equipment. They have also helped referees and coaches through accreditation programs. They have assisted schools in the Western Province who want to start rugby by gifting them resources.
The WPRFU is the most organised provincial union in the local rugby arena. Furthermore, the most number of ‘A’ division rugby clubs come from this province.
