For the fifth consecutive year, Speed Drome Karting Centre Battaramulla, identified by the racing fraternity as having the best tracks for go-kart racing, conducted the driver selection program for the year 2014 for Formula McLarens 1300 recently.
Keeping in line with their vision to identify and develop young talent to compete in single -seater racing in Sri Lanka, a new set of drivers underwent an intensive two day training program at the Pannala Race Track on 1 and 2 March , organised by Speed Drome Ltd.
The program Included both practical and theoretical skills of gear changing, heel and toe techniques, breaking acceleration, racing lines and car control. The participants were also briefed in the mechanics of the Formula McLarens car and racing ethics.
This program has helped over 50 drivers to date to enter competitive motor racing in Sri Lanka and is the only organised form of training conducted in Sri Lankan motor sports.
The Formula McLarens Racing Series is well known as the most competitive, and the only open wheel Racing Series currently held in the Sri Lankan motorsport calendar, which promotes close racing with one make series racing cars, similar to international racing series.
The training program was conducted by the best Formula drivers in Sri Lanka, Shehan De Tissera, Dinesh Jayawardana and Ashan Silva.
A total of 21 drivers participated in the training out of which 10 were selected after a qualifying timing session at the end. Young Karting sensation Fayad Fariz (16 years) topped the timing session with 01.07.17 seconds and Charith Gunawardana (26 years) timing 01.08.48 seconds.
