NirekhTejwani wins nine-and-under Copper Division

Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship 2015 – Day 2

In the most junior category, nine years and under (Copper Division), we saw NirekhTejwani play consistent golf over two days to card scores of 44 and 48, playing nine holes, to take the win. He won by eight shots from Shanak Binuksha who scored 51 and 49 shots.

Closely followed by Pranav Muralidaran taking third place (54, 55), Yun Gu Kang fourth place (56, 55) and Shenuk Fernando fifth place (60, 58).

The Bronze Division (age group category 10-11 years), playing 13 holes, we saw Nigel Fernando from USA take a comfortable lead after the second day’s play with a total score of 117. Followed by K. Danushan who improved in the second round but remained in second position with total score of 126. Yannik Kumara, despite playing consistent golf, remains in third position with total score of 128. Levon Niyarepola on a total score of 134 can surprise with a good score on the last day. We are likely to see competition in this category on the final day.

In the Silver Division (12-14 years), playing 18 holes, Taniya Balasuriya and Vinod Weerasinghe are jointly holding the lead with total scores of 156. Dilshan Malinda and Kayla Perera are competing for the third and fourth slot in the respective age group category and also likely to see competition from T. Vikash and S. Anushan of Nuwara Eliya.

In the age group category 15-17 years (Gold Division), Januka Dilshan continued his brilliant play with a score of 74, taking the total score over two days to 146. G. Dhana Ranjan from Kandy showed high standard too, with a day two score of 79. We are likely to see a top level of golf among the top junior golfers such as T. Akash, Prashan Peiris and Sathsara Dilshan.

The overall winner will be declared the Sri Lanka Junior National Golf Champion for the year 2015.The event is conducted by the Sri Lanka Golf Union and sponsored by Prima Sunrise Bread. There are over 75 junior golfers taking part in this prestigious event at national level.
