The inaugural Mayor’s Cup 2014 was conducted in grand style at the Nittawela rugby stadium yesterday in front of an appreciative crowd.
In the Cup final, Old Kingswoodians beat Army Archives 19-14. The tournament was conducted by the Central Province Rugby Football union (CPRFU) and sponsored by the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC).
The 12-team competition saw Sarasavi win the Shield as they got the better of Matale SC 14-10, while the Bogambara lads ousted Old Vidyartha SC 29-0. The Bowl final was fought out between Old Sylvester’s and the Kandy Municipal Council with Sylvester’s coming through easily for a 29-0 victory. Thivanka Bandara of Old Kingswoodians SC was the Player of the Tournament.
A girls’ exhibition match was also held between Nugawela Central and Haputale MV from Talatuoya. Kandy Municipal Council Sports Committee Chairman Ananda Sarath Kumara gave away the awards. Referees from the Central Province Rugby Referees Society officiated the games.
