The Pin Fernando Trophy 2014 got underway at the Royal Colombo Golf Club with a qualifying round held on Saturday 12 July. This annual event which was inaugurated in the Club’s centenary year, 1979, to honour Sri Lanka’s greatest amateur golfer saw RCGC’s best golfers vying for the title.
The format of this tournament is for RCGC’s member golfers with a maximum handicap of 18 for men to first qualify in a stroke play round followed by the top 16 net scores battling it out in a knockout match play format.
This annual tournament which is now regularly sponsored by Pin’s family firm United Tractor and Equipment (UTE) now has a separate segment for the Ladies Section in honour of Pin’s wife Pam who also had the singular distinction of being in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest lady to win a National title. The RCGC Ladies too have enthusiastically participated even though it is not a Board Event at the RCGC.
The match play for both categories takes place from Tuesday through Thursday during the week and the Finals on Sunday followed by the grand awards ceremony at the recently opened Sports Café Playtrix.
This year UTE has combined with FSCurtis a leading brand in Air Compression solutions.
Results after Tuesday’s Match Play.
