By David Ebert The Entrust Group, one of the country’s leading financial services companies, announced the renewal of its sponsorship of the Sri Lanka Police rugby team at a press conference held at the Dowbiggin Pavilion at the Police Grounds on Friday, 22 November. The sponsorship cheque was handed over to Chairman of Police Rugby DIG M.R. Latiff by Entrust Group Managing Director Chanuka Ratwatte. The sponsorship will cover the team’s performances through this year’s Dialog A Division Rugby Tournament. Entrust Manager Sport Affairs S.W. Chang during his speech delivered a gentle but firm reminder to the current Police line up: “The Police rugby team have been champions for many years and they have contributed immensely to Sri Lanka rugby on the whole by producing great rugby players. To the young Police rugby team, the players of 2013/2014 I want you to know that you wear a Police jersey on the field, and that jersey needs to be honoured and respected because it means a lot to players who have donned it before you.” “Every team has needs and the Entrust Group has come forward to sponsor a team that has been lying somewhere in the middle of the league. It’s easy to find sponsors when you’re at the top but it’s not easy if you are at the middle. However Entrust having always backed sports in the country decided to continue with its support because we can see the potential in the team. That’s the reason. My request to the Police team this season is to move forward and make use of the opportunities you get,” Chang concluded. Police rugby has always had quite a rich history in the game during its “golden era” from 1979 to the early ’90s, having once been eight-time consecutive champions in its heyday and produced some of the country’s most gifted place kickers as well. The Entrust Group is a cluster of companies offering a variety of financial products and services under its two listed subsidiary companies. The group’s subsidiary Entrust Securities PLC is the only listed non-banking licensed Primary Dealer promoting Sri Lanka’s sovereign, gilt edged investments such as T bills and bonds. Its other subsidiary Multi Finance PLC, a licensed finance company has been offering a range of leasing, hire purchase, pawning and fixed deposits for the past 39 years. The group’s subsidiaries also consist of Entrust Healthcare Ltd., Western Sports Management Ltd. and The Standard Credit Finance Ltd.
