By Shamseer Jaleel Police SC shocked the much-fancied third-placed Inter-Club League Tournament outfit, Park Club in their Clifford Cup quarter-final rugby encounter which took place at the Race Course rugby grounds during the weekend. But the biggest shock for local rugby was yesterday, when Air Force kicked Navy SC out of the Clifford Cup with a 37-23 win. Much was expected from the Havies who are in their 100th year of club rugby but Police SC had other ideas supported by their Rugby Committee headed by former Police SC Skipper and Sri Lanka Prop Forward Hafeez Marso supporting them with their needs. Police SC scored five tries, three conversions and one penalty to Havies SC’s two tries, two conversions and two penalties. This season will be remembered for the Park Club being beaten twice by Kandy by very close margins and also losing out on the semi final opportunity in the 104-year-old Clifford Cup. The Airmen created the second major upset for the weekend when they outclassed the defending Clifford Cup Champions Navy SC in a high-scoring encounter. This will see both Police SC and Air Force meet each other on 25 March at Race Course grounds. Both teams were not expected to move forward for a semi final berth before the kick-off of the tournament. In the first quarter final CR&FC recorded an easy 25-8 win over the Army SC outfit after leading 10-8 at the short breather. Now CR&FC will travel down to the hill capital to play Kandy SC in one of the semi-finals on 25 March.
