President’s Gold Cup 2012 to be powered by Dialog Axiata

The President’s Gold Cup Championship, Sri Lanka’s premier annual volleyball tournament powered by Dialog Axiata, will get underway during the second week of November. With an island-wide participation of over 50,000 players, the tournament will be one of the largest sporting events held in the country.



Sri Lanka’s largest telephony services provider Dialog Axiata PLC is stepping in to sponsor the national tournament for the eighth consecutive year, while the tournament has been part of the Sri Lankan national sporting calendar for the past two decades.  The event hosted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation will be held over a period of two months and will attract teams from over the country.  Dilan Perera, Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare and President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation who graced the event as the Chief Guest said, “Having steered the country’s national sport to greater heights over the past couple of years, the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation has embarked on an aggressive programme to engage our youth with the sport at a grass root level.”

The winners and first and second runners-up of President’s Gold cup in both the men’s and women’s category will receive trophies and cash prizes, while special awards will be presented to the best players of the tournament.

“The long standing partnership with the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation for the President’s Gold Cup which is now in its eighth consecutive year is a strong testimony to our commitment towards the sport as well as our willingness to follow through in fostering a game that has a wide following and is the national game of the land,” Pradeep Keerthiratne, Senior General Manager, National Sales at Dialog Axiata PLC said.

“Dialog Axiata is committed towards providing a platform for Sri Lankan youth to reach greater heights in the international sporting arena and the President’s Gold Cup is the tournament that provides such a platform.”
