The Prima Champions Cup 2014 under-15 inter-district and inter-provincial cricket tournament will commence today (3 September) for the eighth consecutive year.
The tournament will feature 580 players from 29 teams around the country. The tournament will feature 39 district matches, played between 3-11 September while the best players from the district teams will be selected for the 10 provincial teams that will then compete for the Provincial Championship to be held from 17-23 September.
Most of the 23 provincial matches will be played outside Colombo, in order to promote the sport in other regions of the country.
The semi-final matches will be played on 25 September in Colombo while the final and the awards ceremony will be held on 27 September at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
Speaking at the launch event held yesterday at the SLC Auditorium in Colombo, SLC Assistant Secretary Hirantha Perera stated that the tournament had grown in stature and popularity over the years while highlighting the importance of featuring teams from all around the country.
“This tournament has become important in identifying young talent and developing it. It features teams from all around the country including teams from Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi,” he said.
The tournament has featured around 2,600 aspiring cricketers since it began in 2007, while Prima Group Sri Lanka emphasised their commitment towards improving the sport in Sri Lanka.
The tournament aims to provide a stage for young cricketers as well as creating feeder squads for the national cricket team.
