Pubudu Dassanayake’s official contract as head coach of the Nepali national cricket team ended on Monday. However, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is still uncertain about the renewal of his contract. CAN says it is not in a position to pay the coach due to a financial crisis.
Issuing a press statement on Monday, CAN said it has not yet received a budget from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and International Cricket Council (ICC) and that it is not in a position to bear the financial burden of the coach.
If the association gets the budget from the ACC/ICC as it used to receive earlier, the board meeting of the CAN will decide on the appointment of the coach, read the statement.
Dassanayake has played vital role in the development of Nepali Cricket as Nepal has advanced up to the ICC T20 World Cup for the first time under his coaching.
Dassanayake, a former Sri Lankan Test player, was first appointed as the new cricket coach for Nepal on 23 August 2011 for a period of six months.
Meanwhile, national team captain Paras Khadka said that Nepal needs Dassanayake to take Nepali cricket further. Khadka also announced that he won’t play cricket if Dassanayake is not back.
