The Asian Under 14 Tennis open taking place at the Queens Gymkhana Club moved in to the top gear with the semi-finalist found after the early rounds were completed yesterday.
The girls No. 1 seed Anya Gunerwardena was beaten 6/3 6/2 in a tough quarter final by Chinese player Zhenghul Tian. Anya however partnered Sathi Silva and beat Tian and Murugesan in the girls’ doubles semi-final to enter the final.
The girls’ No. 2 seed Anika Seneviratne beat India’s Haivarshihe Murugesan 6/1 6/3 to also enter the semi finals. Anika and her partner Probodi Perera have also entered the girls’ doubles final after winning their semi yesterday.
In the boys’ No. 1 seed Sandesh Kantimahanti (Canada) beat Gavt Gupta (India) 6/3 6/2 to advance to the quarter finals. Thevan Perera seeded No. 2 had to fight all the way to beat indian Varsh Bhagtani 6/3 3/6 6/0 in the second round.
Participants from eight countries are playing in the tournament including non-Asian players from the USA and Canada giving the local players excellent exposure.
The tournament continues until Sunday and will be followed by another ATF under 14 next week at the same venue.
