IN-4By Shamseer Jaleel

The centenary big match between Trinity College and St. Anthony’s College was marred by bad light and rain, which prevented a result being reached.

However, up to that point Trinity dominated proceedings at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium over the weekend.

Winning the toss, Trinity took first lease of the wicket. Trinity were watchful in the early overs as the ball was swinging prodigiously and was unplayable at times. But despite losing opening batsman Hasintha Jayasuriya early in the innings both Hasitha Boyagoda and Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan put on 147 runs for the second wicket. Boyagoda’s innings of 90 consisted of seven boundaries and three sixes while his skipper Shanmuganathan’s stroked nine boundaries and two huge sixes. Nevertheless, both fell victim to the fine spin bowling of Antonian Mohamed Alavi, who concentrated on maintaining good line and length.

Continuing from their overnight score of 204 for 4, Trinity made a declaration at 270 for 5. In reply, the lads from Katugastota were in deep trouble with rain saving them when they were 99 for 6 and in danger of having to follow on.
