By Shamseer Jaleel Havelocks Assistant Coach Rajeev Perera was selected as the Head Coach for the national Sevens team for the Borneo Rugby Sevens, which will take place in Malaysia from 28 February to 1 March. This selection was not made through the proper channels of the council members at the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU). With seven clubs playing competitive rugby there exist some quality coaches such as Imthisam Marrikar, Nilufer Ibrahim and Lenard de Zilva. Ibrahim had a successful stint with the national Sevens team for two years, with the team ending in the top three behind Hong Kong and Japan. The national selectors, headed by Michael Jayasekera, have chosen 21 players for an outfit which is tipped to be led by Fazil Marija. The competition will also be a ranking tournament for next year’s Hong Kong Sevens. It will be interesting to see if a makeshift team will be sent for this tournament as there was hardly any time for training and it will be a tough ask for the players to shift gears from Fifteens to Sevens rugby within such  a short period.
