Regional Junior Open Golf C’ship in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy

The Sri Lanka Golf Union together with Prima Sunrise Bread continue its drive to broad base the game in the country and scheduled the two regional opens to be played during the school holiday season in August to facilitate more participation. 

We are likely to see entries for the first time from Nuwara Eliya with junior schools program taking birth after the initiation of the schools program conducted by the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and the Sri Lanka Golf Union development program. 

The regional championship will  be played at the oldest golf course in Sri Lanka, the picturesque Nuwara Eliya Golf Club on 1 and 2 August and followed up at the more recent and very challenging Internationally designed Victoria Golf & Country Resort set on a peninsula jutting into the famous Victoria Reservoir and surrounded by the Knuckles Mountain Range on 22 and 23 August. 

We are likely to see stiff competition among the juniors vying for top honours. The tournament will be played over two days at both locations and will comprise of four age groups namely; age groups under 18 years (Gold Division) under 15 years (Silver Division), under 12 years (Bronze Division), under 10 years (Copper Division). 

The tournament will be open to both boys and girls under the respective age group categories. We are likely to see the talents of G. Danaranjan the Victoria junior golf champion 2014 and Prashan Peiris the Sri Lanka Junior match play champion 2015 and Lamindu Rainika Sri Lanka junior national champion 2014. Also, stiff competition is to be posed by Vinod Weerasinghe, Sathsara Dilshan, Tania Balasuriya, Kayla Perera, Yannik Kumara, T. Vikash, K Danushan and Levon Niyarepola in their respective divisions.

The standard of golf among the junior golfers has improved in the last year with good coaching and development programs put in place. These events will qualify for the Annual National Junior Ranking Points which the SLGU inaugurated in April this year.
