In the spirit of the annual Royal-Thomian cricket encounter which has been played for over 135 years many other sporting activities are held before the big match to build up the hype before this traditional match. One such event is the annual Royal-Thomian Old boys Golf Championship held at the prestigious RCGC golf course each year and has become a part of this traditional rivalry and is etched firmly in the RCGC golf calendar.
Following a lapse of a few years, the Royal-Thomian Golf tournament was revived in 1991 and played as a foursome match play event. Messrs Alavi I Macan Marker and L.C. Gunasekara captained Royal and St. Thomas’ respectively and the match ended in a tie.
The inaugural Royal-Thomian old boys golfing dinner was held soon after this tournament at Hotel Taj Samudra with the former President J.R. Jayewardene as Chief Guest.
Last year the Royalists took the honour by winning the trophy with a comfortable margin of four matches. This year, the tournament will once again attract over a 100 golfers from both schools and conducted on a four ball (best ball) match play basis at the Royal Colombo Golf Club on Sunday 1 March. The organisers promise all golfers an eventful day with many prizes and surprises lined up throughout the day and will conclude with the traditional evening of fellowship where spouses too will be invited and speeches made by seniors of both schools. This will be followed by the awards ceremony, fellowship and a sumptuous dinner.
