Sprinter Sahan Thenuka Rajapaksha of St. Benedict’s College took a step closer to be in contention for major honours at the all-island schools competition when he broke Anandian Arosh Kariyawasam’s record in the boys’ Under-15 100 metres at the Western Province Schools Athletics Championship concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium last Friday (4 July).
Rajapaksha slashed 0.1 seconds from the previous record to win the Under-15 100-metre dash in a new record time of 11.2 seconds. The former record holder, Kariyawasam, set the record in 2011 and later went on to win all-island school competitions and also represented Sri Lanka at several junior international competitions.
The athlete trained by prominent sprint coach I.D. Premasiri had many admirers including school coaches when he established the new record yesterday.
The Ben also was the winner of the 200 metres in his age category.
The performance in the 100-metre dash won him the Best Athlete title in the Under-15 age group.
The 14-year-old has shown signs of being a future prospect with his dashing sprints at junior lower age group events and will be an athlete to watch out for at the forthcoming all-island schools competitions.
