Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara had a dream debut in English County Cricket by scoring an unbeaten century for his team Surrey in the first day of the match against Glamourgan at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff yesterday.
At the close of play, Sangakkara remained unbeaten at 112 off 184 balls. The innings included 14 fours and one six. Together with Steven Davies, who remained unbeaten on 109 an unbroken partnership of 213 of 51 overs was established. Surrey finished the day at 363 for the loss of 3 wickets.
The match was eagerly awaited since apart from Sangakkara’s debut, the return of Kevin Pietersen was a key feature.
Pietersen who is trying bat his way back into the England team however managed to score only 19 off 28 balls.
The duo’s presence had attracted more spectators than the SWALEC Stadium normally gets for a regular county game, both in the stands and the press box, according to British media.
The 37-year-old Sangakkara, who is fifth in the all-time list of Test run scorers and the fourth highest ODI run-scorer, has joined Surrey for the majority of the 2015 season.
