Dark horse of school rugby football, Science College, Mount Lavinia stamped their class at the recently concluded All Island Inter School Under18, seven a side rugby encounter which concluded at the Royal Sports Complex last week-end. In the Cup final they outclassed Trinity College, Kandy by 17/5. Isipathana grabbed the Plate, Dharmaraja the Bowl and Zahira took walked away with the Shield trophy.

Zahira beat Maliyadeve 28/14 to grab the Shield trophy while Rajans defeated C W W Kanangara MV 22 to nothing to take away the Bowl Trophy to Kandy. Plate final was closely fought out between Royal and Isipathana in the end Pathana edged out the Royal lads 12/7.

Ball handling errors cost Trinity in the first half where they conceded 12 points to the Mount Lavinia School. But they never recovered even in the second half though played well. Both the teams scored one try a piece.

Science Rugby Chairman Wasantha Perera told the Daily FT: “We have a great bunch of boys playing for the school. Their pride is to represent the school. Many Colombo schools have tried to grab them, but they never gone behind those offers. Head Coach, Amila Chathuranga has been with us for the last seven years; he is an asset in the coaching unit. One unique thing about this win was that we played minus our regular skipper Dananjaya. He got injured about one week back after playing in the Under 20 school sevens. All others wanted Dananjaya to take the trophy when it was awarded. Let’s wait and see, we should be in top three this year among schools in the coming XV a side season.”
