By Shamseer Jaleel Former Trinity College, Kandy Sports Club and Sri Lanka fifteens skipper Sean Wijesinghe will be playing his last game for the defending league champions and finalist of the Clifford Cup Knock-Out rugby, Kandy Sports Club when they lock horns with the Police SC at the Nittawela Ruby Stadium tomorrow. Sean, who also led the up country team for the Triple championship in 2008/2009, played for Trinity in the year 2000. He played under the captaincy of David Luchow, and in the following year, he was deputy to Thisal Jayawardena. He won his colours in rugby football and basketball while at Trinity. Sean captained the basketball team, Under-15 at cricket. At senior level Sean represented the National Rugby Team against South Korea, Hong Kong and the Arabian Gulf and Chinese team. He led the National Rugby Team at the Asian Five Nations Top 5 in Colombo. During the series his knee was damaged and he was away from rugby for more than one year. Speaking to the Daily FT, Sean said: “Being skipper it is not an easy task. You have to be self-motivated and disciplined, you can’t make excuses, you will be criticised if something goes wrong, and you will be praised if things work out well. For me, being a skipper is being a trustworthy person to your team mates. If I know one thing, it is that if I stand up for my mates, they will stand up for me on the field. And I’m so privileged to have such boys who will go all the way to achieve a common goal. My boys at Kandy are great they have a passion for rugby and love for the club. “More than anything we are backed by our rugby committee and the die-hard supporters. Wherever we play, they are there in numbers to support us. When we play at home they are at the ground more than two hours before the commencement of the rugby. We players are just nothing without spectators and sponsors. The unforgettable period is winning 10 league titles and the Clifford Cup championship. Another highlight is leading the national team to win the Asian Division I and getting promoted to Top Five in Asia.”
