Former Thomian, CR & FC player and Sri Lanka fly half Asanga Seneviratne will continue to head Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) for the 2017/2018 period.

This was decided at the Annual General Meeting which took place at the National Olympic House (NOC) in Colombo during the weekend with no changes made to the current committee.

Speaking to the media, Seneviratne said: “We have made steady progress in the shorter version of the game. In the senior segment, at the Asian Sevens we ended second only behind Hong Kong, which is remarkable. At the junior level we won the Under-18 and Under-20 tournaments in Asia, which speaks volumes for the juniors. The way forward in the country is Sevens rugby. We will focus on the Super Sevens with the first leg taking place in the rugby crazy city of Kandy before the second leg moves to the racecourse rugby grounds in Colombo.

Seneviratne went on to state: “We are very happy with the progress made by our women’s outfit with limited exposure. In the future we will get more tournaments for them in the Asian region. Our women’s outfit won the Borneo Rugby Sevens, which was a remarkable performance in a short span of time. Seneviratne concluded by saying schools rugby too should be administrated by Sri Lanka Rugby and hinted that club rugby could see the return of foreign players.
