The Singer League 2016 came to a short breather with the first round coming to an end. Two leading title contenders, Isipathana and Thomians ended round one on a high note remaining unbeaten in their five matches played so far.

The Thomians playing some cohesive rugby stood out and no one expected them to perform so well this season. They started off by pocketing out the School Sevens under Pandula de Silva. This famous win by the Mount Lavinia school came after 22 long years last winning in 1994. They won all trophies on offer this season. They beat Joes, Royal, Trinity, D.S. Senanayake and Wesley. Four of them played for trophies. They will meet the 4th placed Katugastota Antonians in their first second round encounter.

Leading title contenders Isipathana are the firm favourites this year, having won all their five matches without much sweat. Their last game against Science, though a close one, Isipathana had complete control from the start to end. They will meet Wesley in their first second round encounter.

Royal who are enjoying their Bradby first leg win will meet the Peterites. Trinity will be up against Science test in their opening encounter but will be focusing more on the Bradby second leg on 14 May. They are five points behind and will need to put the finishing touches to their moves and try to use their speedy three quarters more when they lock horns at Pallekelle rugby stadium on 14 May.

The two teams in each group, Joes, D.S. Senanayake, Kingswood and Dharmaraja, will compete for the Plate segment in their second round.
