Royal edge out Trinity in Bradby first leg

Royal College secured the first leg of the 72nd Bradby Shield when they edged out Trinity in a game played under wet conditions where the ball handling was very difficult. Trinity played well in patches but failed to put the finishing touches for their moves.
Royal on their part with the conditions helping them played well within themselves. Whenever they came in to opposition territory they scored. History in the last four decades favours the first leg winning team to take home the Bradby Shield. Royal are the favourites to retain the shield once more when they meet each other in the second leg on 14 May at the Pallekelle rugby stadium. This will be not a tournament encounter.
Isipathana continue unbeaten run

Science=23 points
Isipathana College continued their unbeaten run at the end of the first round of the Singer league 2016 when they edged out Science 29/23 in a tense battle at Havelock Park last Friday.
Isipathana after leading 21/8 at the short breather let the visitors, Science get off to late start only after 30 minutes. They scored through their dashing Winger, Tharindu Maduranga. With the penalty Science were led 8/29 at the short breather. Isipathana scored 4 tries in the initial half. After the turnaround Tharindu Maduranga who had a grand game scored his second try through an interception covering nearly 70 meters.
Referee Rohan Fernando was escorted off the field when a few fans tried to assault him. The hosting team Isipathana avoided any unruly events after the game. Isipathana ended round one on top followed by Science, Peter’s and the Antonians.
Joes outclass DS in record score
Joes=80 points
DS=7 points
St. Joseph’s College ended their first round on a high note when they scored the highest score in the Singer League 2016 when they ran circles around the D.S. Senanayake outfit, inflicting a huge 80/7 win. Joes scored 14 tries to which D.S. replied with one.
Unbeaten Thomians end round one on high note
S. Thomas’=21 points

Thomians too ended their first round unbeaten winning all the trophies came their way starting from the school sevens which they reclaimed after 22 years. They lived above expectation led by Pandula De Silva and Coached by Laga. They scored three tries to beat the Wesley outfit and wet conditions by 21 to nothing. S. Thomas’, Royal, Trinity ended on top three in the Cup segment in the Singer league 2016.
Antonians end on a winning note
St. Anthony’s=23 points
Kingswood=22 Points
Antonians edged out home town rivals, Kingswood by the narrowest of margins. Kingswood after taking the lead in the initial half led by 12/10 but the Antonians stormed back not only to win the game but also secured a top 4 end to get qualified for the Singer League Cup segment in the second round. Though the Kingswoodians scored four tries to Antonians 2 the Randles Hill school conceded too many penalties which was the deciding factor in the end.
Peter’s outclass Rajans
St. Peter’s=36 points
Dharmaraja=6 points
Under difficult conditions for ball handling Pet3rites scored a run away 36/6 win over the Rajans who ended one before the last in their group. Peter›s managed to end at number 3 in their 5 matches.
Top 4 finishers from both the groups will play on a cross group basis to determine the winner of the League this year while the last placed two teams in both groups will form a 4 team event for the Plate segment of the Singer league 2016. Kingswood, Dharmaraja, D. Senanayake and Joes will meet each other in the Plate encounter while the rest of the teams will move forward in the 8 team Cup segment by playing 4 games across the other groups.
