SL dominates at the Sawasdee Cup Seniors Badminton Championship in Thailand

The Sawasdee Cup, organised by the FYC Badminton Club, the Thai-Chinese Friendship Association, WCBF, the Administration of the District of Pattaya and the Tourism Authority of Thailand was held from 18-20 November at the Eastern National Sports Training Centre, Pattaya City, Chon Buri, Thailand.

The event was worked out in the following categories.

1.  Young Adult age between 20-39 years (20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39 years old)

 2. Senior age between 40-59 years (40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59 years old)

3.Honorary Senior age between 60-79 years (60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 years old)

4. Honorary Senior age over 80 (80-84 years old, more 85 years old)

5.Combined Age: Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles

6.Combined Age of 100 years (each competitor must be at least 40 years old)

7. Combined Age of 110 years (each competitor must be at least 45 years old)

 8.Combined Age of 120 years (each competitor must be at least 50 years old)

9.Combined Age of 130 years (each competitor must be at least 55 years old)

 10.Combined Age of 140 years (each competitor must be at least 60 years old)

11.Combined Age of 150 years (each competitor must be at least 65 years old)

 Sri Lankan contingent dominated the events tally as they recorded several wins for Sri Lanka at this event as follows.

  • Women’s Singles (over 35) Champion – Chandrika De Silva
  • Men’s Doubles (over 45) Champions – Clarence Homer and Upendra Jayawardene
  • Men’s Singles (over 40) Runner-up – Manjula Fernando
  • Mixed Doubles (over 40) Runner-up – Chandrika De Silva and Clarence Homer
  • Combined aged (over 130) Doubles runner-up – Rohan De Silva and Fritz
