SLIIT holds Shuttle Buds for the 6th time

The Sports Council of SLIIT held the eagerly awaited inter-university and age group ‘Shuttle Buds 2017’ Badminton Championship for the sixth time at the institute’s campus in Malabe recently. 

Over 500 students from campuses and schools across the island participated in the tournaments. This year the age groups for the tournaments were the Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 segments and the matches were played on a knockout basis. 

The Chief Guest at the final awards presentation was SLIIT Managing Director and CEO Prof. Lalith Gamage. Prof. Gamage congratulated the winners and was appreciative of the enthusiasm and competitive spirit displayed by all the participants who hailed from different parts of the country.

A parent of an Under-13 competitor, Asitha Peris from Moratuwa, said: “It is very commendable of SLIIT to provide this opportunity for young students to participate in a badminton championship of this stature for so many years continuously. It helps to promote the game while encouraging students to strengthen their skill as well as character.”  

This year’s Under-17 winner from Royal College Dumindu Abeywickrema said: “I’m proud and delighted to have participated and won in a tournament that is played strictly according to the rules and regulations approved by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association. The matches were superbly organised by the SLIIT Sports Council.”SLIIT Sports Council President Dhananjaya Polkotuwa, a third year civil engineering student at the institute, explained: “It is a pleasure to be a part of SLIIT’s Sport Council in addition to our studies because it provides invaluable experience and an opportunity to hone important life skills that help to become a well-rounded individual.”

The main sponsor of the tournament was Li-Ning, the world-renowned brand synonymous with badminton-related products.
