Speed Drome takes endurance karting to a new level

Speed Drome Karting Centre Battaramulla, the pioneers of Go Karting in Sri Lanka bought Karting to a new level with the 1st round of the “Endurance Karting Championship” for 2014 which was launched over the weekend at Speed Drome Battaramulla. This championship was organised for the second consecutive year with four hours drive time which was increased from last year’s three hours, adding new challenges. 2014 will bring forward a brand new4 round championship for young and senior racing talents in Sri Lanka. Round 1 was worked off at Speed Drome over the weekend with six teams taking part consisting of four drivers and two pit crew members. All teams had to drive for four hours nonstop with in-between pit stops and driver changes and the winners were selected from the most number of laps completed at the end of four hours. Two teams, Raptor Racing and Team Gunners fought a hard fall battle for the top positions, at one point were on the same lap for almost an hour. Meanwhile Intek Racing and BKMS Racing teams fought very closely for 3rd place throughout the four hours. After a hard fought, passionate and physically draining period of four hours, Team Gunners represented by drivers Adeeb Gazzali (Captain), Ayesh Bandara, Shanaka Bandara and Kalim Iqbal emerged as winners, recording 492 laps, and Raptor Racing represented by drivers Taffy Alahakoon (Captain), Charith Gunwardana and Fayad Fariz finished 2nd with 490 laps. Third place was won by Intek Racing team represented by drivers Eshan Peries (Captain), Rikaz Khalid and Kyle Crosland with 483 laps just over 1 lap against BKMS Racing team represented by Perera family, drivers Bryan Perera (Captain), Kevin Perera and Saman Perera who ended in fourth place with 482 laps. “The entire team is thrilled to win the first leg after a closely competed race that was very challenging. Thank god for Red Bull! We are looking forward to a repeat performance in the second leg as well,” winning team Ayesh Bandara said. Teams managed to win vital points in round one with Gunners taking home 25 points, Raptor with 22 points and Intek Racing taking away 18 points. The overall champion will be decided after the completion of all four rounds with the team with the highest accumulated points being crowned as Speed Drome Endurance Karting Champions 2014. The event was sponsored and partnered by Wurth Lanka who always backs and support motor sports in Sri Lanka. Round 2 of the Championship to be held on 26 April 2014 starting from 3 p.m. onwards at Speed Drome, Battaramulla. Teams will have more focus on increasing their points tally as they move on to fight for the Championship title.
