Sri Lanka edged out by South Korea

By Shamseer Jaleel Sri Lanka Youth rugby team was edged out by the South Koreans by 31 Points (3 Goals, 2 Tries) to 28 Points (4 Goals) in their Junior World Rugby Tournament encounter which was played at the Race Course rugby grounds yesterday. At the short breather South Korea led 24-21.

For Sri Lanka tries were scored by Sudath Sooriyarachchi, Sanchana Sheik, Nimshan Jayawardena and Tharinda Ratwatte who was on target with the four try conversions. Sri Lanka looked good in attack split the Korean defense on number of times but in defense they looked very sloppy which cost them the game. Ball handling too was on the lower side.

In the opening game of the tournament Hong Kong thrashed Taipei by 44-5. If Sri Lanka is to win their berth for the Youth Rugby World Cup in Portugal next year they will need to come up with an excellent performance against Hong Kong and Taipei. On 24 September, South Korea will battle it out with Chinese Taipei at 2.30 pm. On the same day hosts Sri Lanka will engage Hong Kong at 4.30 p.m. Three days later on 27 September the final day’s proceedings will take place at the Race Course, where Sri Lanka will meet Chinese Taipei and later in the evening Hong Kong will clash with South Korea.
