Reuters: Captain Dinesh Chandimal said on Monday (17 March) that Sri Lanka go into the ICC World Twenty20 full of confidence after their recent victory in the Asia Cup.
Sri Lanka have topped the rankings in the format for the last 17 months and are on a high after beating holders Pakistan to win the Asia Cup in Mirpur earlier this month.
Speaking at a press conference Chandimal said his side did not feel any pressure to bring the T20 title home to their passionate fans, who have watched their team falter in the final of four World Cups - both 50 and 20-over - since 2007.
“Everyone is over the moon after the Asia Cup so I don’t think we have any pressure. We are number one ranked in the world so we did our bit, we kept our number one ranking last couple of years,” he said.
“Everyone is in good form so we are looking forward to achieving the trophy.”
One factor in their favour is that Sri Lanka avoid other big sub-continent sides in the group stage where they will play England, South Africa and New Zealand, in addition to a qualifier still to be determined.
“We have a good chance because the three teams are overseas so I think we are lucky to have this side. But you never underestimate any team, especially for the T20, it could change any time. As a team we are looking forward to doing our best, that’s the main thing,” he said.
