Sri Lanka to participate at Borneo Rugby Sevens

By Shamseer Jaleel Six national men’s teams and an equal number of women’s teams are expected to fight for top honours at the inaugural Borneo Rugby Sevens 2015, an Asia-Pacific regional Sevens tournament which is set to take place at the Eagles Sports Arena of the Eagles Rugby Club (ERC) in Malaysia on 27 February to 1 March. Asia will be represented by Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, China and Japan and they may face a strong challenge from Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Cook Island from the Oceania region. The tournament, with a total cash prize of $ 39,200 is organised by the Eagles Rugby Club. A total of 34 teams from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, China, Tonga, Samoa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Cook Island and Malaysia will be taking part in the three-day event. With the inter-club season on, the national Sevens team is likely to represent a makeshift team for this tournament. This year’s Asian Sevens series will take place in Shanghai, Bangkok and Colombo. Japan, Hong Kong and Korea will play each other in home and away fixtures in the Asian Top Three segment. Sri Lanka will play in the division one tournament.
