Sri Lanka ups SAG tally to 37; trails India

Sri Lanka yesterday increased its tally of medals at the 12th South Asian Games 2016 in Guwahati, India to 37 but trailed the host which has 42.

India’s tally comprised of 27 gold, 12 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Sri Lanka’s haul stood at eight gold, 17 silver, and 12 bronze whilst India tally was boosted by its swimmers. Its swimmers won 10 medals: four gold, five silver and three bronze. Wrestlers accounted for five medals — four gold and a silver — and weightlifters lifted three golds.

Sri Lanka’s swimmer Matthew Abeysinghe  yesterday grabbed his third gold of the Games: the most by any swimmer so far. Sri Lanka’s Kimiko Raheem set a Games record when she won the women’s 200m backstroke with a timing of 2:18.09.

Pakistani swimmer Lianna Catherine Swan won her country’s first gold on Saturday in the 2016 games. She won the women’s 200m breaststroke on Saturday at the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati, India. Sri Lanka’s Hasanthi Nugawela (2:49.17) came second.
