The MercedesTrophy, one of the most prestigious golf tournaments with a renowned international golf reputation, was once again witnessed at the Victoria Golf Club on 9 June. The participants of this tournament comprised of distinguished achievers from all walks of life and many found this event a great opportunity to meet and interact with other Mercedes-Benz owners.
Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC, General Distributor for Mercedes-Benz in Sri Lanka sponsored the MercedesTrophy this year for the 22nd consecutive time, and gathered the most elite golfing community in Sri Lanka, where participation is limited to owners of Mercedes-Benz, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles.
MercedesTrophy Sri Lanka country finals results are as follows: Fran De Mel won the Ladies Division while Shama Perera and Niloo Jayathilake became first and second runners up respectively. Rohita Silva won the Gents Division – Group C while Tyronne Weerakkody and Ifthika Ahmed became first and second runners up respectively. In Gents Division – Group B, Anirvan Ghosh became the winner while Gihan Wickramasinghe and Nimal Perera became first and second runners up respectively. In Gents Division – Group A, Sarath Priyaratne was the winner whereas Asakawa Yukiyasu and Sidath Wettimuny became first and second runners up respectively.
The winners and the first Runners-up now stand the chance to compete in the MercedesTrophy Asian Finals and if successful compete in the world finals in Germany. The climax of the series is the world final, which for years has been held traditionally in and around Stuttgart, the “cradle of the automobile”. This venue underlines the close relations between the brand Mercedes-Benz and golf. This year’s Asian Finals will be played in Australia from 8 to 10 August, and the World Finals will be played in Stuttgart from 13 to 17 September.
Usha De Sliva was a member of the team that won the Nations Cup at the MercedesTrophy World Finals in Stuttgart in 2011. She was a member of the South East Asian team. The tournament took place from 28 September to 3 October at Nippenburg – located on the northwestern edge of Stuttgart. Adam Scott – professional golfer from Australia who is the ambassador for Mercedes Golf was the chief guest for this event.
